Harry Maurice Nanney, age 85, of Irmo, South Carolina passed away August 17, 2026, at NHC Parklane Healthcare, surrounded by the love of his family. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 4 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church; 1811 Dutch Fork Road; Irmo, SC with visitation 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow on Friday, September 11th at 11:30 a.m. in the Nanney Family Cemetery; 385 Tabernacle Road; Black Mountain, NC. Family will receive friends following at that adjoining Tabernacle Methodist Church. Harry was born on November 30, 1940, in Asheville, NC to the late Cecil and Eleanor Nanney. He was raised in Black Mountain, NC on Midland Avenue in a house built by his father and shared with his late brothers Ossie and Ted (The Bear).
Harry was a graduate of Owen High School, class of 1959. And a graduate of Montreat College, where he met his beloved wife, Susan. Harry also earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Indiana University. Go Hoosiers!
In 1966, Harry answered the call for service to his country and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He completed his basic training at MCRD Parris Island and went on to earn his Military Occupational Specialty as an Engineer. He was stationed at Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan where he achieved the rank of E5 Sergeant. A role that defined his discipline, leadership and dedication throughout his entire life. He was always a proud Marine.
In 1969, he married the love of his life, Susan Robinson in Indianapolis, Indiana. They were married 53 beautiful and happy years until her passing in November 2022. Together they raised two daughters and had five grandchildren. Harry and Susan loved travelling extensively together, but the place he loved the most was his beloved Appalachian Mountains.
In 1969, Harry applied his heavy-equipment expertise to a long and successful career, building a respected legacy with MacAllister Equipment, Carolina Cat, and Blanchard Machinery, from which he ultimately retired in 2002. He specialized in aggregates and mining and was a longtime member of the Mining Association of South Carolina.
During his and Susan’s retirement years in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Harry was able to enjoy spending time in his prized garden and yard that overlooked the Blue Ridge Parkway. He became a Master Beekeeper and loved sharing his knowledge and Western North Carolina prize winning sourwood honey with his community. His love and gentle care of his little, tiny bees will always be treasured.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Karen Ballentine of Irmo, SC. Lisa Nanney of Indian Land, SC. Five adoring grandchildren, Sarah Jeansonne (Mason), Houston, TX. Jacob Rubino, Los Angelos, CA, Emma Ballentine, JC Ballentine, both of Chapin and Henry Holcombe, Indian Land, SC.
