Milton Holmes

Milton Holmes, born on November 8, 1945, in Burgaw, NC, to the late Charlie Holmes, Sr. and Wilheminia Lamb Holmes, went to his eternal rest on September 5, 2022. Milton moved to New York in the 1960s, where he continued his education in the New York School system and graduated from Boys High School. He attended the Police Academy and served for twenty years with the New York Police Department (NYPD) as a plain-clothes detective in the Anti Crime and Homicide Unit at the 88th precinct in Brooklyn. After retiring from the NYPD in 1989 he worked as a locksmith before relocating to South Carolina in 2012 to be with his children and grandchildren. Milton enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, cooking, and most of all he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He truly had a heart of gold and to know him was to love him. He was preceded in death by his late wife Helen Puryear Holmes, son, Milton Holmes, Jr., daughter, Jeanine Heath; grandson, Christian Holmes; brother Talmadge Holmes and sister Linda Lyde. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 7 years, Merta Aviles Holmes; Children: Sharon Holmes-Caggiano (Late Patrick), Gerald Wayne Holmes (Nadia), Monique Sweat (Blease), and Chenoa Heath, stepson: Dewan Dennie; Siblings: Alphonza Holmes (Arnita), Charles Holmes, Jr. (Late Elaine), Clarence Lamb (Angela), and Greta Holmes; Grandchildren: Tyrone Windley, Wayne Holmes (Alyssa), Ta’Quan Sweat (Asia), Marquell Hampton, Dre’Von Sweat, Matthew Holmes, Tianna Hampton, Jeremy Holmes, and Amaris Holmes. Great-grandchildren: Malliyah Hampton, Hasahn Hampton, and Jayda Lewis. Godchildren: Janet Heath, Marilyn Aviles, Ariana Mendez, and Johnathan Mendez. He also leaves a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews as well as other family and friends. A wake for Milton Holmes, 76 of Columbia, SC, will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022, from 1:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. Burial will be held on Saturday in Burgaw Cemetery, North Carolina.
